New Delhi: Days before its theatrical release, Chhaava found itself embroiled in controversy over the ‘lezim’ dance scene. The much-talked-about sequence sparked objections from politicians and history enthusiasts, leading to public outrage. In a recent development, filmmaker Laxman Utekar announced on Monday (January 27, 2025) that the it will be removed from the film.
According to PTI, Utekar made this decision after a discussion with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray at his residence in Mumbai earlier that day. Speaking to reporters, Utekar said that the meeting was to seek Thackeray’s advice, acknowledging his extensive knowledge of history, particularly about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Utekar further said that Thackeray provided valuable suggestions for changes, which the filmmakers are committed to implementing.

The director further stated that the scene depicting Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj performing the traditional lezim dance will be removed. He clarified that the filmmakers never intended to offend anyone’s sentiments and highlighted that their aim was to honour the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
The dance sequence had faced widespread criticism on social media and backlash from political leaders, who argued that it disrespected the historical figure. In Chhaava, Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, portraying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai respectively, were shown performing with the traditional musical instrument associated with Maharashtra’s cultural heritage.
Utekar explained that the scene was not a significant part of the film and, given the concerns raised, the team decided to remove it. He added that their goal has always been to showcase the greatness of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj to the world and they are open to making adjustments to ensure historical accuracy. He also mentioned that the film is the product of four years of meticulous research, eying to educate audiences about Sambhaji Maharaj’s contributions as a warrior and king.
Chhaava is scheduled for release on February 14, 2025, coinciding with Valentine’s Day. It boasts music composed by Academy Award winner AR Rahman.
