Cheque Bounce Case: What did Ram Gopal Varma say about his 3-month jail sentence?

New Delhi: After being sentenced to three-month jail in the Cheque Bounce Case, Ram Gopal Varma has issued a statement addressing his involvement in the case being heard in the Andheri Court. Clarifying the matter, the filmmaker revealed that the case pertains to a seven-year-old dispute involving the amount of Rs 2.38 lakh and relates to a former employee.

A magistrate court in Mumbai on Tuesday (January 23) convicted and sentenced Ram Gopal Varma to three months imprisonment. The court further directed the filmmaker to pay compensation of Rs 3.72 lakh to the complainant within three months and if it is not paid, then Varma will have to spend another three months in jail. The court has also issued a non-bailable warrant against him.

What did Ram Gopal Varma say?

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma emphasised in his statement that the issue is not about the settlement, which he referred to as “meagre”, but about “refusing to be exploited in the attempts to fabricate”.

The case is related to a complaint filed by a company named Shree against Ram Gopal Varma’s firm. He has been found under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which pertains to cheque bounce due to insufficient funds. According to reports, the Andheri Magistrate court had initially scheduled to give their verdict on January 21 but the Satya director missed the session, further compelling the court to share their verdict hours after he announced his film, Syndicate.

The company alleged that a cheque issued by him had bounced due to insufficient funds. The filmmaker was granted bail in 2022 after he provided a personal bond and security deposit of Rs 5,000. After several hearings, the verdict came against him, stating that there was sufficient evidence to prove the allegations.
