New Delhi: Sending shockwaves throughout the music industry, Bengali vocalist Pratul Mukhopadhyay reportedly breathed his last on Saturday (February 15, 2025). It is being said that the renowned songwriter was 82 years old at the time of his tragic demise.

PTI quoted a senior official of the West Bengal health department as saying that Mukhopadhyay passed away following a prolonged illness. He was believed to be suffering from pancreatic ailments and other age-related health issues.

Mukhopadhyay was said to be undergoing treatment at the state-run SSKM hospital. The official further told the news agency that his condition did not improve even after surgery, adding that he died in the morning. It is to be noted that Mukhopadhyay was shifted to the ITU following a deterioration in his health condition a couple of days ago.

CM mourns Mukhopadhyay’s death

Mukhopadhyay is survived by his wife. As soon as the news of his death surfaced online, netizens started flooding social media with messages of mourning.

“Noted Bengali singer Pratul Mukhopadhyay has passed away. His iconic song Ami Banglay Gaan Gai will forever resonate in the hearts of Bengalis across generations,” BJP’s Agnimitra Paul posted on X (formerly known as Twitter). She added, “His contribution to Bengali music and culture is immeasurable, and his voice will continue to inspire us. Om Shanti. May his soul rest in peace.”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Mukhopadhyay at the SSKM hospital a couple of days ago. She expressed her deep grief over his demise and extended her condolences to the singer’s family and his innumerable fans.

For the unversed, Mukhopadhyay was the writer and singer of the famous Ami Banglay Gaan Gai and Dinga Bhashao Sagore songs. He was best known for composing songs that highlighted social issues and for singing them without the accompaniment of musical instruments. Mukhopadhyay was admired by music lovers of all age groups. He leaves behind an array of songs that will be cherished forever.
