New Delhi: Actress Mamta Kulkarni, who has now become the Mahamandleshwar in the Kinnar Akhada, has also changed her name. Now, she is called ‘Shri Yamai Mamta Nandgiri’. She performed pind daan on Friday (January 26) in Prayagraj at Maha Kumbh 2025.

For the unversed, Mahamandaleshwar is a title given to Hindu monks who spread knowledge about Sanatan Dharma and give up worldly pleasures. For a Bollywood actress, Kulkarni is now named Shri Yamai Mamta Nandgiri. Let’s explore more detail.

Mamta Kulkarni’s new name

Mamta Kulkarni has renounced her past life and embraced spirituality by becoming a Mahamandaleshwar. She has permanently left behind the glamour and film industry, symbolically marking a new spiritual beginning. At the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, Mamta performed rituals at the Sangam, signifying her departure from her previous identity and the commencement of her new spiritual journey. She will now be known as Mahamandaleshwar Shri Yamai Mamta Nand Giri.

She has acted in numerous Bollywood films. However, she had been away from the film industry for a long time, dedicating herself to penance. Now, she has become a sannyasin, having taken initiation from the Kinnar Akhara and adopted a spiritual path. During the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, Mamta received initiation into sannyas within the Kinnar Akhara and was honoured with the title of Mahamandaleshwar.

In the presence of Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Dr. Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi of the Kinnar Akhara and Mahamandaleshwar Swami Jai Ambanand Giri of the Juna Akhara, Mamta Kulkarni was consecrated as Mahamandaleshwar. On the evening of January 24, she performed the Pind Daan ritual. Becoming a Mahamandaleshwar entails significant responsibilities and involves an extensive process, including rituals such as the Patta Abhishek.

Mamta Kulkarni began her film career with the 1992 Tamil movie Nanbargal. The following year, in 1993, she made her Bollywood debut with Tirangaa. However, it was the 1995 film Karan Arjun, directed by Rakesh Roshan, that brought her significant recognition.
