Swara Bhasker’s X account suspended after ‘controversial’ Republic Day post – What really happened?

New Delhi: Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker has found herself in hot waters yet again. The Tanu Weds Manu star recently took to her official Instagram handle to announce that her X (formerly Twitter) account has been suspended. Swara, 36, is known for starring in some major Box Office hits like Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Kangana Ranaut’s Tanu Weds Manu Returns.

Over the years, she has grabbed headlines for her political tweets and polarising opinions online. On Thursday (January 30), the actress shared that her X account has been suspended, calling the move ‘ridiculous and untenable by any rational.’

Why was Swara Bhasker’s X account suspended?

In her caption, Swara described how she was unable to access her X account and that permanent suspension was approved. “(You can’t make this stuff up!!!!) Dear X, Two images from two tweets have been marked as ‘copyright infringements’. Basis which my X account is locked / disabled, I can’t access it and permanent suspension has been approved by your teams.”

Swara Bhasker further explained that one of the images, featuring an orange background with text in Hindi Devanagari script reading “Gandhi Hum Sharmindaa hain, Tere qaatil zinda hain,” is a well-known slogan associated with India’s progressive movement. She emphasised that there is no copyright violation, as it resembles an urban modern folk idiom. The second image flagged as a violation depicts her own child, her face concealed, waving an Indian flag with the caption “HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY India.”

The actress questioned how this could be a copyright infringement, asking who holds the copyright on her child’s likeness. She described both complaints as unreasonable and unsupported by any rational or legal understanding of copyright law.
