Rajkumar Hirani admits Dunki underperformed | Know how much Shah Rukh Khan starrer collected

New Delhi: There is no denying the fact that Rajkumar Hirani is one of the most successful directors in India. Movies by the 62-year-old filmmaker not only garner critical acclaim but also work wonders at the Box Office. However, he feels that his last release, Dunki, didn’t live up to his expectations.

In a conversation with Komal Nahata on the Game Changers YouTube channel, Hirani admitted that it is difficult to predict how people will react to the story of a flick. He added that some stories resonate with people, while others don’t. Hirani mentioned that, to this day, he cannot tell what works and what does not.

As the dialogue progressed, Hirani was asked to name one film that performed less at the Box Office than he had expected. In no time, he replied by saying Dunki.

Dunki star cast

The much-talked-about film starred Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. It also featured Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, Vikram Kochhar, Anil Grover, Jyoti Subhash and Deven Bhojani. One of its major highlights was Vicky Kaushal’s brilliant extended cameo appearance.

Produced under Rajkumar Hirani Films, along with Jio Studios and Red Chillies Entertainment, Dunki was released in theaters on December 21, 2023. It mostly received mixed-to-positive reviews.

Dunki collection

The comedy-drama is believed to be a commercial success. It is considered to be one of King Khan’s few recent releases made on a modest budget. According to Sacnilk, Dunki grossed Rs 272 crore in India during its theatrical run. The industry tracker further stated that the movie collected Rs 454 crore at the Box Office worldwide. However, the collection was much lower compared to SRK’s last two flicks, Pathaan and Jawan, both of which attained blockbuster status.

The storyline of Dunki revolved around a group of friends in Punjab who struggle to clear the immigration process. This is when an ex-soldier guides them to enter the UK illegally.
