Ne Zha 2: Chinese film beats Inside Out 2, becomes highest grossing animated movie

New Delhi: The animation genre in cinema is no longer restricted to kids. In fact, nowadays, it is loved and admired by moviegoers of all age groups. And, the monumental Box Office collections of animated flicks are strong proof of their popularity. One such film that has been working wonders at the ticket counters in cinemas is Ne Zha 2.

As per Reuters, the Chinese animated blockbuster left behind Pixar’s Inside Out 2 on Tuesday (February 18, 2025) in terms of collections. The news agency, citing data from the ticketing platform Maoyan, further stated that Ne Zha 2 is now the highest-grossing animated film across the globe.

You will be amazed to know that the fantasy adventure movie has reportedly raked in a total of 12.3 billion yuan (USD 1.69 billion) at the Box Office. It is to be noted that this number includes pre-sales and overseas earnings. Ne Zha 2 is now believed to have attained the position of the eighth highest-grossing Box Office movie globally.

Interestingly, more than 99 percent of Ne Zha 2’s earnings have come from China itself. On the other hand, animated films from Hollywood often depend on a worldwide marketing strategy, which contributes significantly to their Box Office figures.

Ne Zha 2 is said to be a sequel to the 2019 hit Ne Zha. It is considered to be based on a 16th-century Chinese novel, titled The Investiture of the Gods, which depicts the protagonist with magical powers who tries to defend the fortress town of Chentangguan.

Ne Zha 2 has been directed by renowned Sichuan-born filmmaker Yang Yu, also known as Jiaozi. The flick dominated the 2025 Lunar New Year Box Office by attracting massive footfalls to theaters.

The film opened to mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences. In the coming days, Ne Zha 2 is expected to shatter more records at the Box Office and achieve new milestones.
