DYK Varun Dhawan REFUSED India’s Got Latent offer? Said, ‘That type of humour…’

New Delhi: Samay Raina is known for his ‘dark comedy’ or ‘new age humour’. The comedian has often been criticised for his content but his fanbase stood strong beside him. The matter of fact is that the newer generations’ humour is very different to the ‘modest and clean’ comedy that Indian society is used to. It is the access to global communities that makes the age gap apparent.
Many argue that the controversy surrounding Samar Raina and his content is blown out of proportion. It is believed that India is ‘not ready’ for Samay Raina’s humour, one that millions of Indians have been enjoying for a while. An old interview with Varun Dhawan echoing a similar sentiment has resurfaced. Here is what the actor had to say.
Why did Varun Dhawan reject India’s Got Latent offer?
In an old Ranveer Allahbadia podcast, Varun Dhawan revealed that he was invited to appear on India’s Got Latent, but he refused because of a few concerns. First, Varun Dhawan felt that despite the fact that he would love to appear on the show, he was concerned about how he could negatively impact the show. “I could get cancelled, but I am not scared. My concern is that it could affect his show negatively. The more eyeballs you get with that type of humour, it becomes a crossfire,” said Varun Dhawan.
When Ranveer urged Varun Dhawan to consider going on the show, the actor further added that the teams he works with might have concerns about associating himself with such content. He concluded that he would consider appearing on the show when he is not promoting to avoid unnecessary backlash on the film.
In hindsight, Varun Dhawan’s appearance on India’s Got Latent is not possible now. But, the point he brought up about bringing more attention to the show would only create a backlash. That is similar to what happened with Ranveer Allahbadia’s comment. Whether the joke landed well with the audience or not, the comment did not gain traction until it spread online, reaching brand-new demographics. When the controversial episode first aired, regular viewers of the members-only IGL episode did not take Ranveer’s remark seriously. However, the moment the clip went viral, a new audience, who did not share the same humour snowballed the video into a nationwide controversy. Was the comment tasteless, yes, but would this incident have been this viral if it weren’t for Ranveer Allahbadia and Samay Raina on the target? A part of the internet does not think so.
