A tigress and a wild boar accidentally fell into a well after an intense chase by the predator went wrong at Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh’s Seoni, officials said.
The incident, in Pipariya Harduli village of Jikurai forest range, came to light on Tuesday morning when villagers arrived to fetch water from the well.
According to the reserve’s deputy director Rajnish Kumar Singh, the tigress, aged around three years, was chasing the boar when they both ended up inside the well.
Hunt forgotten, predator and prey then waited for hours, trying to get out of the pit, often resting against each other, together in danger.
They were rescued after a four-hour-long operation, Mr Singh said.

The rescue was as dramatic as the rest of the story.
A cot was lowered into the well with the help of a rope and the tigress sat on it. A rescue team put a cage into the well with a hydraulic crane and captured the tigress safely, the official explained.
The wild boar was also rescued in the same way, he said.
Mr Singh said around 60 rescuers were involved in the operation to save the two wild animals.
The chief wildlife conservator has directed to release the tigress in the Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary under the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve of Sagar district, he added.
