New Delhi: In a shocking turn of events, a group of pro-Khalistan extremists recently stormed a cinema in London and attempted to disrupt the screening of Kangana Ranaut’s starrer Emergency. In viral visuals, individuals with their faces covered can be seen inside the theater, apparently trying to stop the show.

It is to be noted that the historical biographical drama revolves around the 21-month-long Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi from 1975 to 1977. The period is often regarded as one of the most controversial and transformative chapters in Indian political history by many.

Emergency controversy

For the unversed, Emergency was finally released on the silver screen on January 17, 2025, after facing numerous protests in the past. According to ANI, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring stated on Friday that governments and censor boards must monitor such films as they ‘hurt’ the brotherhood in the nation. The political leader further added that such movies depict scripted stories that are not based on truth.

The news agency also quoted a Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member as saying that their protest was against Emergency because it portrays the history of the Sikh religion and the events of 1984 in a distorted manner. He mentioned that they had protested against the movie earlier as well.

Emergency collection

As per Sacnilk, Emergency earned Rs 4.25 crore in India on Sunday (January 19, 2025). The industry tracker further reported that the total domestic collection of the film now stands at Rs 10.35 crore after three days of its release.

In the film, Kangana Ranaut plays the role of former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi. The movie also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Ashok Chhabra, Mahima Chaudhry and Milind Soman in pivotal roles.
