Saif Ali Khan attack case: Mumbai court cites ‘international conspiracy suspicion’

New Delhi: Saif Ali Khan’s alleged attacker identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad has been sent to 5 days of police custody. He was arrested by Mumbai Police in Thane on Sunday (January 19). A Mumbai Court said that the police’s contention of an international conspiracy cannot be ruled out as the accused is from Bangladesh.

After detaining three suspects and questioning over 30 people, Mumbai Police arrested the accused from Thane. The attacker, who was arrested, stabbed Saif Ali Khan six times in his Mumbai residence. The actor was then rushed to the Lilavati Hospital with her son Taimur Ali Khan and staff Hari.

Court cites international conspiracy

A Mumbai Court noted that the accused is a citizen of Bangladesh and the suspicion of international conspiracy “cannot be said to be impossible”. Hence, sufficient time has to be given to the investigation officer, the court said while granting 5-day police custody.

The accused, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, was brought to the Bandra Court on Sunday afternoon after his arrest. The police sought 14-day custody but the defence lawyer contested the plea.

The investigating officer argued that the accused injured the actor Saif Ali Khan and they needed to determine how he entered the residence, including the motive behind the attack hence, they would need 14-day custody. However, the defence opposed saying that he is not a Bangladeshi but an Indian citizen who lives in Mumbai. As per defence, the arrested accused is unaware of the details of the case.

Saif Ali Khan health update

Saif Ali Khan is currently admitted to the Lilavati Hospital. He is recovering well and will be discharged in a couple of days. Meanwhile, Mumbai Police recorded Kareena Kapoor’s statement. In her statement, she said that the attacker was “aggressive” and was attacking Saif repeatedly. According to her statement, the fight broke out while the actor was trying to protect his youngest son Jeh.
