Kangana Ranaut starrer Emergency in legal soup as Patna High Court issues notice

New Delhi: Ever since its announcement, Emergency has been marred by controversies. After multiple delays, the Kangana Ranaut starrer was finally released in cinemas a few days back, only to find itself surrounded by another dispute. The Patna High Court recently issued notice to the 38-year-old star in a copyright infringement case regarding the film’s historical biographical drama.

A single bench of Justice Abhishek Reddy issued the notice to the renowned actress after hearing the petition of Kalpana Singh, the daughter-in-law of renowned poet Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’. It was mentioned in the petition that a line from Dinkar’s famous poem ‘Singhasan Khali Karo Ki Janata Aati Hai’ was used in the movie without permission, which is a violation of copyright.

It is to be noted that a legal notice was also issued in this matter on August 31, 2024. However, there was no response to it. But, during a telephonic conversation with national poet Dinkar’s grandson Hrithik Udyan, the film’s lyricist Manoj Muntashir had stated that this was done at the behest of the film’s producer-director Kangana.

At the same time, the Patna High Court refused to ban the screening of the film Emergency. Further updates on the matter are still awaited.

Emergency Box Office collection

According to Sacnilk, rough data indicates that Emergency raked in Rs 1.01 crore on Thursday (January 23, 2025). If the number turns out to be accurate, then the total domestic collection of the movie now stands at Rs 14.42 crore. The industry tracker further stated that the flick has minted Rs 17.15 crore at the Box Office across the globe so far.

In Emergency, Kangana portrays the character of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Ashok Chhabra, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, Satish Kaushik and Darshan Pandya in pivotal roles. While Tetsuo Nagata handled the cinematography of the movie, it was edited by Rameshwar S Bhagat.
