New Delhi: Hopes were riding high on Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light as it locked horns with fierce rivals from across the globe in the Best Film Not in the English Language category at BAFTA 2025. However, it failed to clinch the honour at the much-talked-about event.
The 2024 drama film, written and directed by Payal Kapadia, lost to the French title Emilia Perez on Sunday (February 16, 2025). The award function took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

For the unversed, the storyline of Emilia Perez – helmed by director Jacques Audiard – revolves around four remarkable women in Mexico. Its plot follows a cartel leader who enlists an unappreciated lawyer to help fake her death so that she can finally live authentically as her true self.
All We Imagine As Light plot
All We Imagine As Light brings to the screen the tale of two Malayali nurses in Mumbai and their friendships. The highly-discussed movie scripted history by becoming the first from India to win the Grand Prix at Cannes in May 2024. It stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, Hridhu Haroon, Azees Nedumangad, Tintumol Joseph and Anand Sami in pivotal roles.
The development comes as the third significant upset for Kapadia and India, as the flick also failed to win any trophies at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards earlier in 2025. However, it is garnering immense love and appreciation from cinema lovers on the global stage.
78th British Academy Film Awards
It is to be noted that the papal thriller Conclave won four titles, including Best Picture, at the 78th British Academy Film Awards. Interestingly, The Brutalist equaled its awards tally by scooping four trophies, including Best Director for Brady Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody.
Prince William, who wasn’t present for the award function, sent a recorded video message that played before the presentation of the Rising Star Award. The BAFTA Awards ceremony was streamed in India on Lionsgate Play.
