New Delhi: Following the Ranveer Allahbadia, aka BeerBiceps’ controversy on Samay Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent, a dark shadow has been looming over the Indian comedy scenes. Comedians who use ‘abusive language’ in their content are being heavily criticised. Another such comedian, Anubhav Singh Bassi, has been facing the aftermath of the ongoing controversy.
Anubhav Singh Bassi’s Lucknow shows have been cancelled following an official letter from the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission. Here is what happened.
Anubhav Singh Bassi’s UP shows cancelled
The Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission vice-chairperson Aparna Yadav wrote a letter to DGP Prashant Kumar on February 14, 2025, requesting him to ensure Anubhav’s shows don’t ‘malign women’ or to cancel them altogether. The letters brought up the comedian’s use of inappropriate language in previous acts and stressed that the state needs to maintain their decorum. “Hence, you (DGP) are expected to please ensure that in this proposed programme and similar programmes of stand-up artists, neither any indecent words nor any undignified comments are made on women. Such shows should be cancelled and not permitted in the future if possible,” read the letter.
For context, Anubhav Singh Bassi was scheduled to perform in Lucknow at 3 PM and 7 PM on Saturday (February 15). Aparna Yadav further spoke to ANI and said, “I do not believe that hurling abuses at mothers and sisters is necessary to make people laugh.”
Why was Anubhav Singh Bassi’s show cancelled?
According to India Today, following the letter, the organisers were denied a No Objection Certificate to hold the show. ACP Radha Raman Singh cited security concerns over ‘objectional content’ as the reason for cancelling the show. He further added that this decision was indeed influenced by the India’s Got Latent controversy.
Anubhav Singh has yet to address the show’s cancellation on his social media accounts so far. Fans are not happy with the direction the Indian government is taking following Ranveer Allahbadia’s controversy. The netizens seem outraged by the authorities and call it the ‘worst decision’.
