How many seasons of ‘The Last of Us’ are left? HBO FINALLY drops hint

New Delhi: HBO has seemingly mapped out the endgame for its hit post-apocalyptic drama, The Last of Us. According to the channel’s Head of Drama, Francesca Orsi, the series is expected to conclude in four seasons. But, as with everything in the TLOU universe, there’s always a twist.

Speaking to Deadline at The White Lotus Season 3 premiere, Orsi dropped a major update on the future of The Last of Us. “We don’t have a complete or final plan, but I think it’s looking like four seasons. I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this, and we’re done,” she said.

How will HBO fit The Last of Us Part II into just two more seasons?

While that sounds like a solid roadmap, there’s still a question mark hanging over how the show will handle the story from The Last of Us Part II, the video game that Season 2 is based on. From the start, creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have highlighted that The Last of Us Part II is too massive to fit into a single season. The game introduces multiple timelines, complex character arcs, and a deeper emotional narrative—meaning it needs space to breathe.

Season 2 of the show is set to premiere this spring and will consist of just seven episodes. That means at least two more seasons will be needed to fully explore the events of Part II. However, Orsi’s comments suggest HBO is determined to keep the storytelling tight rather than dragging it out unnecessarily.

What about The Last of Us Part III?

Here’s where things get interesting. Sony and The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann have hinted at a possible Part III game. If that happens, would HBO extend the show beyond four seasons? Right now, the answer is unclear.
